Role Summary

Education + Awareness is a central pillar to our organization. By making women, the public, the healthcare system, supporters and government aware of relevant information related to the unique health needs of women, we will drive discourse and action towards a gendered approach to healthcare.

Reporting to the Senior Director, Strategy, the Senior Manager, Education + Awareness will manage the Education + Awareness portfolio of the organization to position the Foundation as a credible voice in the women’s health space, raise brand awareness, provide credible, evidence-based information for our communities and tools to support women advocating for their own health. This will include the development of reports, collateral and other assets and their associated role out; identification and management of speaking opportunities for Foundation representatives; management of the earned media portfolio; and the development of evidence-based content related to events or campaigns.

Specific Accountabilities

Education + Awareness Portfolio

  • Leads Education + Awareness initiatives for the Foundation, including the development of reports, collateral, and other assets.
  • Works closely with funding and research partners on the coordination of research and educational material, reviews material to ensure evidence-based and credible, and works with the Marketing team for the dissemination of material.
  • Provides guidance on Education + Awareness initiatives to Foundation staff, including training sessions where appropriate.
  • Conducts regular environmental scans, tracks emerging opportunities related to women’s health, and develops recommendations for action.

General communications

  • Manages effective communication strategies, special projects, and communications campaigns to position the Foundation as a credible voice in the women’s health space and raise brand awareness.
  • Leads and maintains the Foundation’s Writing Guidelines, to continually adhere to best practices and raise the caliber of all written content across the organization.
  • Develops and maintains a knowledge bank within the Foundation to ensure all facts released are credible and traceable, maintain the Foundation reputation, and improve efficiencies in communication.
  • Writes and edits content for print communications, speeches, newsletters, videos, website copy, and editorial articles. Supports writing for social media, proposals, and nominations/awards when required.
  • Supports Foundation staff by providing content as relevant, and ensuring communications are fact-checked to prevent any reputational risk to the Foundation, and strategically aligned to the Foundation’s mission.
  • Leads relevant agency and vendor relationships related to this position including our media vendor, and participates in the onboarding and direction of agency and vendor relationships led by the Senior Manager, Marketing.
  • Works closely with the Senior Director, Strategy to implement methods for on-going evaluation of the performance and effectiveness of our communication channels and content, including education + awareness reports and earned media metrics.
  • Assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the Senior Director, Strategy and/or President + CEO, consistent with the scope of the job.

Media Relations Management

  • Manages the development and execution of the Foundation’s proactive and reactive media strategy, with the goal of procuring strategically beneficial and brand-positive media across a diverse range of platforms and outlets, often consulting and collaborating with the Senior Director, Executive Communications as needed. This includes: acting as key point of contact for all media enquiries; maintaining network of media and communications professionals on behalf of the Foundation; compiling all relevant material for media appearances including background documents, key messages, press kits and briefing notes; appraises key stakeholders about our media efforts when relevant.
  • Develops and manages metrics to evaluate and improve the success of the media relations portfolio.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Communications, journalism or bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred; plus at least five years’ communications, and/or media relations and/or knowledge translation experience and demonstrated success (or a combination of education and related experience). Not-for-profit experience is an asset.

  • Advanced writing and editing skills;
  • Advanced command of the English language, spelling, grammar and syntax;
  • Ability to write persuasively, clearly, and concisely, and to seamlessly blend together information from multiple sources;
  • Recognize the credibility of information sources to ensure reputational risk, including the constructive critique of research;
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish positive work relationships with people at all levels, internal and external to the organization;
  • Ability to work under pressure and produce high quality accurate work, with strong attention to detail, in a timely manner, often to tight deadlines;
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a multi-task workload;
  • Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgement;
  • Ability to work independently and, at the same time, work effectively in a team environment;
  • Demonstrated resilience and commitment to the Foundation and Hospital values;
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of programs specifically Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
  • Knowledge of best practices related to major gifts fundraising is an asset.
