Dr. Chan comes from McMaster University Medical Centre where she was Head, Obstetrical Medicine, Department of Medicine, and Associate Professor, Faculty of Medicine McMaster University/University of Toronto, Hamilton. She was also the Dr. William Walsh Chair in Internal Medicine at McMaster. Her previous appointments include Interim General Internal Medicine Division Director, General Internal Medicine, and Medical Director, Clinical Decision Unit, at the Women’s College Hospital.
Dr. Chan graduated from the University of Alberta medical school in 1992, followed by certification in internal medicine from the University of Alberta in 1996. She undertook a fellowship in Women’s Health at Women’s College Hospital from 1996-98, and in 2000, she received a Masters of Science degree in clinical epidemiology from the University of Toronto. Dr. Chan completed a Physician Leadership Program through the University of Toronto in 2008.
Dr. Chan has published annually in peer-reviewed publications on the topic of venous thromboembolism in pregnancy, and most recently on antiplatelet therapy in outpatient settings, and made presentations in these areas both nationally and internationally. She has also been a reviewer for the CMAJ, Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology Research, Journal of Thrombosis and Hemostasis, and others.
Dr. Chan was the unanimous choice of the search committee to build and lead the newly-formed BCW Department of Medicine by bringing the internal medicine specialists from various programs under this one department
