Dr. Dorothy Shaw receives the Order of Canada

BC Women’s obstetrician/gynecologist and Vice President of Medical Affairs appointed to the Order of Canada, to recognize outstanding achievement, dedication to the community, and service to the nation.

Dr. Dorothy Shaw was announced as one of the new appointments to the Order of Canada on June 30, 2016.

An appointment to the Order of Canada, made on the recommendation of the Advisory Council for the Order of Canada and announced by the Governor General, is one of our country's highest civilian honours.

Dr. Shaw has been an advocate of women's health throughout her distinguished career. She has advanced maternal and newborn health, and championed women's reproductive rights on all fronts.

At present, Dr. Shaw is the Vice President of Medical Affairs at BC Women's Hospital and a Clinical Professor in the UBC Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine. In addition to holding previous leadership positions at BC Women's and within the UBC Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Shaw was the first woman president of the International Federation of Gynecology & Obstetrics, (FIGO). She was the youngest person to ever lead the Society of Obstetricians & Gynecologists of Canada, as Past President. Dr. Shaw was named one of Canada's 100 most powerful women by The Women's Executive Network and in 2010 she was named as Canada's spokesperson for the G8/G20 Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Children Health (PMNCH).

Dr. Shaw is also dedicated to mentoring new medical leaders and is generous with her expertise. She is a driving force behind a team-based skills development initiative at BC Women's that makes use of simulation technology to streamline processes and communication, and ultimately reduce complications in the delivery of patient care.

We are fortunate to have medical pioneers working with our team in British Columbia.

Congratulations Dr. Dorothy Shaw!
