Hylcan Foundation Gives Grant for Four Masimo Pulse Oximeters

Since 2001, The Hylcan Foundation has been very supportive of Women's, with grants each year. Thank you, Hylcan Foundation for your constant and generous support!

Today, we received support from the Hylcan Foundation yet again - this time to purchase four of the eleven needed Masimo Pulse Oximeters. This gift will help to ensure our sickest babies receive the very special care they need and are not at risk for further complications because of too much oxygen.

The donation will pay for four oximeters, docking stations, cables, installation parts, taxes, and delivery costs.

With over 1,500 babies cared for in Women's Special Care Nursery, Hylcan's gift will enable our medical team to provide highly sensitive care for the babies who have serious complications. And, knowing that Women's has the best equipment to care for their babies means that families are confident in the care they will receive in our hospital.

Best Beginnings for BC Families

BC Women's is Canada's busiest maternity hospital and our province's premiere centre for high-risk maternity care. With an average of one birth every hour and 15 minutes, over 7,200 babies are born here each year. That's 3,000 more per year than at any other hospital in B.C.

BC Women's must expand to meet the needs of our patients. Women have not been admitted - or are sometimes diverted to other hospitals during active labour - because there were not enough delivery rooms. That's about to change: nine specialized birthing rooms - called Single Room Maternity Care rooms - open March 6, 2006.

Thanks to our generous donors, the Best Beginnings Campaign by BC Women's Hospital & Health Centre Foundation has raised over $1 million to fund vital equipment for these specialized birthing rooms. From fetal monitors and birthing beds, to bassinettes and First Hour of Life units, this overwhelming support will help to ensure the best start for babies and their families!

TB Vets

As BC's tertiary centre for high-risk maternity and newborn care, Women's has First Hour of Life Units on standby at every birth. This special equippment keeps newborn babies warm and resuscitates babies who are not breathing or gives extra oxygen to those who are having difficulty.

Oxygen is both a life saving and highly toxic substance for newborn babies, particularly for premature babies. Pure oxygen causes blindness and increases the severity of both acute and chronic lung disease in newborns. It also affects brain development. That's why for resuscitation it is much safer to blend pure oxygen with air.

Thanks to TB Vets, this year 10 First Hour of Life units at BC Women's will be retrofitted with air/oxygen blenders so that physicians can accurately blend pure oxygen with air, eliminating the risks of 100% oxygen.
