When my sister Helen discovered her unborn son, Rylan, had no heartbeat, our whole family was devastated. I was in school in Victoria at the time and couldn’t be with her. But I know the team at BC Women’s Hospital was very supportive of Helen, even after she went home.
My classmate Joumana Ghali saw I was hurting and suggested we take our minds off our sadness by doing something positive. Together, and with the help of the UVic HINF Alumni Charity Team, we organized a beer and burger night, silent auction and raffle at Ceili’s Modern Irish Pub. It was Helen who came up with the name “Rainbow after the Storm.” By doing this event we would be showing other families that there’s a rainbow after the storm of tragedy. The event sold out and raised $20,300 for BC Women’s NICU. It was hard work but it was totally worth it. It was truly a healing journey for me and for my family.
